On bipartisan votes, the Oregon House on Monday approved a package intended to ease the state’s housing crisis by spurring the development of new homes to make housing in Oregon more affordable.

It will allocate $75 million to subsidize construction of moderate-income housing, $89 million for infrastructure projects such as the extension of sewer systems and $106 million to operate shelters and prevent evictions.

The package would also expand housing for people who are newly clean and sober, establish a one-time tool for cities to expand their urban growth boundaries and create a statewide housing office to help local jurisdictions navigate housing laws.

“This bill is a strong, important policy that will make a meaningful impact in helping alleviate Oregon’s housing supply shortfalls,” said Rep. Maxine Dexter, a Democrat from Portland. “It also provides meaningful opportunities to build a stronger supply of affordable housing for our working families.”
